Find Community, Connection & Celebration at The CP Social
Community, connection and celebration were at the heart of this year’s CP Social in Portland, Oregon — and the weekend offered meaningful opportunities for people with cerebral palsy to connect, reflect and build relationships.
The event began Friday evening with a casual “mini meetup” at Everywhere Brewing in Southeast Portland, giving attendees the chance to connect ahead of Saturday’s main gathering. Community members traveled from across North America and the Pacific Northwest, and the additional time together helped create a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere.
On Saturday morning, participants gathered along the Southwest Waterfront to enjoy the view, share conversation and meet new friends before reconvening later that afternoon at Rae Loft for the CP Social. For many attendees, the experience marked the first time they had been in a space surrounded by others with cerebral palsy — a moment that can feel both overwhelming and deeply affirming.
“It was amazing to meet and interact with others who have the same condition I do,” said Liz, a CP Social attendee. “For the first time, I was able to share my experiences with people who could relate — and hear theirs as well.”
The afternoon featured storytelling, moderated discussion and time for informal connection. During the live storytelling session, volunteers shared brief reflections and life lessons, highlighting how common themes — including self-acceptance, adulthood and identity — often emerge across diverse experiences with CP.
A moderated panel discussion followed, focusing on mobility aids and assistive technology. The conversation expanded to include topics such as navigating family dynamics, social interactions and perceptions of disability in everyday life.
Our time concluded with open conversation, community connection and a raffle celebrating the spirit of togetherness that defines each CP Social gathering.
Although cerebral palsy affects each individual differently, the weekend reinforced a shared understanding: There is something powerful about being open about what it’s like to navigate life with a disability. That vulnerability can help us feel less alone — and help others understand that our differences are not shortcomings, but sources of strength.
