CP Social: 2025

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The CP Social is an in-person, celebratory event that’s kind of like an unofficial happy hour/networking event/support circle — creating a space that doesn't typically exist for disabled people. It's an opportunity to make lifelong connections and build community for and with people with cerebral palsy in a more informal setting.

This event takes place at an accessible venue designed to bring people together to engage in conversation, share stories, enjoy food, drink, experience music, performance, even nature, and more.

The CP Social is primarily organized as an evening event (~five-hours) where we generate discussion on navigating life with a disability and invited speakers, panels, roundtable-style discussions and moderated Q&A. Topics have included accessibility and ableism, career development, traveling, religion and faith, higher education, parenting, managing healthcare and self-advocacy, assistive technology and treatment options, and more.

It’s a lot of fun, and a little imperfect, but we’re just getting started!

  • At this stage, the CP Social event is primarily designed by and for adults with cerebral palsy (21+) because this is how and for whom this event originated. Please note: this choice is less a matter of exclusion, and more due to capacity and funds available to us — we’re so excited to do more and bring everyone along with us!

It’s our goal to expand what the CP Social looks like and who it’s for — that includes our disabled peers, allies and families, children and young teens with CP, as well as their parents and caregivers, in the coming years.

This expansion will be our priority in future fundraising efforts because we know how important belonging, community, and connection is for everyone.

  • Social support is an urgent need expressly stated by our community over the last decade. We’re in the business of building spaces for belonging for people with CP because we’ve all been there — alone, misunderstood, less than — it’s not easy being disabled and we want you to feel seen and heard. We think the CP Social achieves that.

We know that in-person events aren’t always easy — whether you’ve got a bit of social anxiety, or there’s a global pandemic, or traveling is just.too.hard. — we get it!

Making connections with other people like you is a beautiful experience that goes beyond words we’ll describe here. We see so much value in coming together with other people who have CP and we’ll do whatever we can to make this an event you won’t forget if and when you’re ready to join.

  • In the past, the CP Social has been free to attend thanks to generous donors and supporters. We're committed to offering free registration to all events to reduce financial strain on participation because we know that cost is a barrier for many people.

With that said, we will need your support to fundraise or donate so that we can honor this commitment. We hope you’ll join us in making this a reality for everyone who wishes to attend!

  • At this stage, we have capacity to host an annual event and so, that is what we’ll plan for in 2025. However, it’s our goal to expand our events program in various ways, depending on a few key outcomes such as fundraising, community feedback and interest, and more.

Over the next 3-5 years, Cerebral Palsy Strong aims to organize several events annually in major cities across the US, expanding attendance, programming, geography, and scale.

As we expand this activity even further, we plan to engage the community's appetite for smaller scale, local events of similar nature called the CP Social: Mini Meetup where one can express an interest in organizing an event in their community and we'll provide support throughout the process.

In tandem with events, we'll also develop networking and mentorship opportunities that will take place virtually and in-person at the CP Social.

  • "When I heard Katherine say, ‘I’m 33 years old and this is the first time I've ever gotten together with this many people just like me!’ It really puts things into perspective. There's a need for this! Let's keep it going!"

    — CP Social Attendee, 2019

  • “I was surprised by how many people showed up because I didn't know how many people to expect, and I was surprised to hear that some other people had never met (or hadn't met many) other people with CP before either.”

    — CP Social Attendee, 2019

  • "I would love to meet more people my age with CP like me and talk about our experiences and help each other out. I don’t know anyone else that is my age with CP and I would love to make some new friends! It’s rare when I physically meet another with CP."

  • "I was surprised at how much more I've learned about cerebral palsy. Thanks for such a phenomenal event.”

    CP Social Attendee, 2019

  • "I feel like it would be a life-changing experience to meet other people with CP; it will show us we’re not alone and we have friends who understand the struggles. New friends and community sound wonderful! :)"

    — CPstrong community member, survey 2020

  • "I have struggled to find people throughout my life who understand and appreciate what I experience with cerebral palsy, so I would love if the connections I have begun to make online could be extended into real life."
